Overview

The Great South West Walk is Victoria's best-kept secret. This 250-kilometre continuous loop takes in untouched coastline with massive limestone cliffs and pristine beaches. Meandering rivers, remote bushland, Aboriginal heritage sites, and freshwater lakes add to the remarkable variety, making this one of the most diverse walks in Australia.

The route begins in the Cobboboonee Forest at the headwaters of the Surry and Fitzroy Rivers. From there, the picturesque Glenelg River carves through a spectacular limestone gorge. The track then moves through the pristine sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, and freshwater lakes of Discovery Bay Coastal Park. The grand finale is the Three Capes and Bays section, where the track hugs the clifftop all the way to the end.

The full Great South West Walk is a genuine challenge. A highlights version covering the finest sections over a more manageable 8 days is also available.

Where You'll Stay

Twelve nights on this walk are spent in cosy bed and breakfasts and lodges spread across remote towns along the Great South West Walk. Many of the hosts have been welcoming walkers on this route for decades and bring a warmth and familiarity to the experience that sets these stays apart. At Nelson and Bridgewater, stepping out onto the track each morning barely feels like leaving, given how close the rooms sit to the surrounding wilderness.

What You'll Eat

Breakfast kicks off every morning of this walk, with twelve included throughout, mostly cooked at your accommodation and a continental spread provided at Seaview. Eleven walker's lunches are taken out on the trail each day at some of the Great South West Walk's finest locations, each one varying but always packed with a high-protein salad, a roll or wrap, a muesli bar, something sweet and fresh fruit, carried in your own insulated lunch bag. Six two-course dinners are spread across the walk, with meals at Bridgewater Bay coming from the local cafe or a nearby restaurant.

Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.

Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.

More About This Trip

The walk both starts and finishes in Portland, in southwest Victoria, Australia. The nearest international airports are Melbourne (MEL), around 5 hours away, and Adelaide (ADL), around 6 hours away. For those travelling by public transport, a combination of trains and coaches connects both cities to Portland. The nearest regional airports are Warrnambool (WMB) in Victoria and Mount Gambier (MGB) in South Australia, both with onward coach connections to Portland. Please contact us for further details on transport connections.

This walk is available from September to May, excluding the winter months of June, July and August, with no fixed start days. Spring and autumn are the finest seasons, with mild temperatures, wildflowers and comfortable walking conditions throughout. Summer is generally pleasant, with sea breezes keeping temperatures manageable, though February can bring periods of significant heat and early starts are advisable. Pack a waterproof and sun protection whatever the season.

Please note that this walk includes beach sections, so it is worth checking tide times before setting out each day. The Bureau of Meteorology provides tide charts for Portland; do not hesitate to contact us should you need any help understanding them.

This walk is graded moderate, reflecting the length of some of the longer days rather than the difficulty of the terrain. Daily walks average 22.7 kilometres with around 329 metres of ascent and descent, and a terrain difficulty rating of 4 out of 10. The walking is mostly flat over well-walked paths, bush tracks, and some sandy sections, with days running to between five and seven and a half hours. Good walking boots are recommended, and building up to covering longer distances comfortably in a single day is the most important preparation for this trip.

A regular training routine of three to four times per week, with some longer walks incorporated as departure approaches, is recommended. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

The notes are fantastic and great to have the app as well. The hosts were a highlight. Each went above and beyond. Our hosts in Nelson took us to Mt Gambier and Port McDonald for dinner, which was so lovely and enabled us to see more of the area. Great local knowledge. Our pick ups and drop offs were perfect as well. So well organised making it such a stress free trip for us. Great food too! Shout out to the Bridgewater Cafe, food was a highlight! Just from a safety point of view, I’d emphasise the being prepared for snakes…we saw one, but a nurse from Mt Gambier we ran into had three snake bite emergencies at the hospital the day before. We were happy we took a sat phone. Highly recommend that. We thought the days were really well set out…each day was amazing in its own way. A really fantastic world class walk! Loved it!

Notes were great on the whole. Detailed and step by step explanations very useful and fairly accurate.

I can highly recommend doing a self-guided GSSW with Auswalk. Excellent communication before the walk, the standard of accommodations is high and everything worked seamlessly. The walk itself is very enjoyable with diverse forest, river, ocean and lake sections. For the most part the track is flat with very few hills, well maintained by volunteers and very well signposted.

As usual all aspects of the walk were seamlessly organised. We like the new app, but love the notes for the extra info on the things we see on the walk. Accommodations were well up to the standards we have come to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

The nearest major airport is Melbourne Airport, with Portland approximately 3.5 hours by road from the city. All transport and luggage transfers along the route are included in the package — check your specific itinerary for full departure logistics.

Cooked breakfasts and walkers' lunches are included each walking day, along with two-course dinners most evenings. Alcohol and drinks are not included with meals, except for tea, coffee, and juice at breakfast.

This is a pack-free walking holiday. Your luggage is transported between accommodations and you carry only a light daypack on the trails each day. You are shifted along the track to limit time in a vehicle, giving you more time to walk and explore.

The trail is often described as a symphony in four movements — each section has its own distinct character. Highlights include the Glenelg River Gorge, the blowholes and petrified forest near Cape Bridgewater, Victoria's highest sea cliffs, a colony of endangered Australasian gannets, Aboriginal heritage sites, and the chance to spot seals, whales, and abundant wildlife throughout.

Yes — itineraries range from 6 days covering the best highlights through to the full 13-day end-to-end experience. All options focus on the most spectacular sections of the trail.

For safety reasons, solo walkers cannot be accommodated on this walk. The remote nature of some sections and limited mobile coverage mean walking in a pair or group is required.

A good level of fitness is required. Daily distances can reach up to 27km on some stages, and the terrain is varied — river trails, clifftops, beaches, and forest paths. Building endurance through regular longer walks before departure is strongly advised.

Broken-in hiking footwear with good grip is essential for the varied terrain. Pack a waterproof jacket, sun protection, and plenty of water capacity — remote sections offer limited refill points. Note that mobile coverage is patchy in parts of the track.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy should cover injury, cancellation, and loss of luggage.

Tipping is not expected, though always appreciated if you feel those looking after you have gone above and beyond.
